I slept in till about 7am on our approach to Bonaire, so missed the sunrise. I did manage to see the docking though. Captain Afoot pulled in forward so we didn’t have as good a view as Curacao. We decided on the buffet breakfast again as we had an exciting day planned. I had seen on Facebook that the done thing on Bonaire was to rent a golf buggy, so I had booked one before departure. We left the ship about 8.30 and it was already 28 degrees and full sun. Lovely. We found the rental place easily, and, after filling in some waiver forms in case we got squished, we were soon out on the open road. The guy at the desk had given us an idea of where to go so we set off for a drive round the south side of the island. I must admit that I imagined the tiny island of Bonaire to have very little traffic. Wrong. There were loads of cars and loads of golf buggies hurtling along their potholed roads. We still had a whale of a time though.
We learnt that where there were other buggies parked by the side of the road there was something to see. First we came across a lovely beach with people snorkelling and swimming, so we had a swim ourselves. There was also a good view of the ship,
Then we came across some salt flats, which, for some reason, had a reddish tinge.
Next were some slave huts that we stopped to view. Here we ran into a couple birdwatching and we spotted an osprey. There was also a pelican diving about. And very close inland a pod of dolphins.
The lighthouse at the southern tip of the island was next, plus some wild donkeys. All the time we had the sea on our right, and distant flamingos on our left.
We called at a beach club for some lunch about noon. We ate while watching people windsurfing and swimming in the lagoon.
After lunch we continued on the circuit. More flamingos were spotted, plus donkeys and goats crisscrossing the road all over the place.
After a great time we handed our buggy back and returned to the ship.
We had a bit of a rest, then, because we hadn’t really liked the main dining room, decided to try The Glass House for tea. This is another Signature (extra money) restaurant, but we felt it well worth it. We had a sharing plate of scallops, crab, and shrimp, followed by a sharing plate of fruity deserts. The food and service were both amazing. We very much enjoyed it.
A chill in the atrium was followed by a singer in the Live Lounge. She was really good and we retired having had an amazing day.
We are following your blog, sounds lovely.
